What Is Data Migration?

Data migration can simply be explained as moving data from one source to another. In this case from a legacy system to cloud – based NetSuite. The process involves different formats and structures and therefore a thorough cleansing of data is key for efficient data transfer.
Data migration is the process of moving data from one location to another, one format to another, or one application to another. These days, data migrations are often started as firms move from on-premises infrastructure and applications to cloud-based storage and applications to optimize or transform their company.

It generally has three major phases:

  1. Planning
  2. Migration
  3. Post-migration
    HOW CAN WE MIGRATE DATA

We can migrate data through CSV Importing.
CSV import is the commonly used method for transferring small to medium-sized data sets from other applications into NetSuite. The CSV import process saves time and prevents errors, by submitting data in a CSV( Comma-separated value) file. This data can add or update many records at one time, avoiding the need for manual data entry.
NetSuite provides an Import Assistant that you can use to step through the process for most CSV imports. If you have Full access level for the Import CSV File permission, the Import Assistant is available at Setup > Import/Export > Import Tasks > Import CSV Records (Administrator). The types of data that you can import with the Assistant depend upon your assigned role and permissions, and on your account’s enabled features.
FILE MAPPING
File Mapping of the import assistant  process will automatically run and check if all fields in the uploaded file are readable by NetSuite. The system will display an error message if something is not registering correctly.
FIELD MAPPING

Field Mapping of the Import Assistant is where NetSuite determines which NetSuite field to match up with an uploaded field. If using a template file, most if not all of the fields under your fields will automatically show up in the middle section of the screen with a corresponding Netsuite field. If a field under Your Fields has box next to it, then it has already been mapped to a NetSuite field. Fields that have  next to them will need to be manually mapped to NetSuite items.

You can save an import job to be run later. After you have saved an import, you can reuse its mapping for later import jobs and share it with other users. When you run an import, a status page is available for you to view its progress.
