Update GL Matching error – “Transaction cannot be saved because the reference number already exists for this vendor”

When we update the CSV reference or matching reference for the transactions through CSV, the below error appears if there are records with duplicate reference numbers.

“Transaction cannot be saved because the reference number already exists for this vendor”

This is because we have provided the value for the preference “Duplicate number warning” as “Warn and Block”. So Netsuite will not permit users to update the duplicate number records which have been created before we enable this preference. To remove this error and to update the transaction records, we have to do the below:

  1. Go to, Set up> Accounting> Accounting preferences.
  2. Provide the “Duplicate number warning” value as “Warn(UI only)” or “No warning”.
  3. Complete the CSV update of transactions.
  4. Reverse preference after CSV update. (Provide the value as “Warn and Block”).
