Auto Layout in Figma

Auto Layout is a feature in Figma that allows you to create flexible and responsive designs by automatically adjusting the layout of elements based on their constraints and properties. It helps you create designs that can adapt to different screen sizes and orientations without the need to manually adjust each element.

To use Auto Layout in Figma, follow these steps:

  1. Select the elements you want to include in the Auto Layout. This can be a group, frame, or individual elements.
  2. In the right sidebar, under the “Layout” section, click on the “Auto Layout” button. Alternatively, you can use the shortcut “Ctrl + Alt + A” (Windows) or “Cmd + Option + A” (Mac) to enable Auto Layout.
  3. Once Auto Layout is enabled, you’ll see a set of options appear in the right sidebar. These options allow you to define how the elements should be laid out within the Auto Layout container.
    • Direction: Choose whether the elements should be arranged horizontally or vertically.
    • Spacing: Set the amount of space between each element.
    • Alignment: Specify how the elements should align within the container (e.g., left, right, center, top, bottom, etc.).
    • Padding: Define the space between the elements and the container’s edges.
  4. Adjust the properties and constraints of the elements within the Auto Layout as needed. You can resize, move, or add additional elements to the layout. Auto Layout will automatically adjust the positions and sizes of the elements based on their constraints and the options you’ve set.
  5. If you need to override the Auto Layout behavior for a specific element within the layout, you can disable Auto Layout for that particular element by selecting it and clicking on the “Disable Auto Layout” button in the right sidebar.

Auto Layout in Figma is a powerful feature that allows you to create dynamic and responsive designs. It simplifies the process of designing layouts that adapt to different screen sizes and helps maintain consistency across different device types.
