Here are the key differences between GA3 and GA4:
Data Model: GA3, also known as Universal Analytics, uses a session-based data model. It tracks user interactions within a session and attributes them to various dimensions such as source, medium, and campaign. On the other hand, GA4, also known as App + Web or Google Analytics 4, uses an event-based data model. It focuses on tracking individual events and allows for more granular data collection and analysis.
Cross-Platform Tracking: GA3 primarily focuses on web tracking and provides limited support for mobile apps. GA4, however, is designed to track both web and app interactions. It offers more comprehensive cross-platform tracking, enabling businesses to gain insights into user behavior across different digital properties.
Enhanced Measurement: GA4 includes enhanced measurement capabilities, providing automatic tracking for common events such as page views, scrolls, video engagement, file downloads, and more. This reduces the need for manual implementation of event tracking codes.
Machine Learning and AI: GA4 incorporates advanced machine learning and artificial intelligence capabilities. It offers insights such as churn probability, predictive analytics, and audience forecasting. GA4 also integrates with Google’s BigQuery, enabling more sophisticated analysis and data processing.
Reporting Interface: The reporting interface in GA4 has been revamped compared to GA3. It offers more flexibility in customizing reports and exploring data. GA4 emphasizes user-centric reporting, allowing businesses to focus on individual users’ journeys and behavior.
Future Focus: Google has indicated that GA4 will be the future standard for its analytics platform. While GA3 is still supported, Google encourages new users to adopt GA4 and provides resources to facilitate the migration process
