To set up a VPN connection on a Windows device

To set up a VPN connection on a Windows device, follow these general steps:

  1. Choose a VPN Service: First, you need to subscribe to a VPN service. There are many third-party VPN providers available, such as NordVPN, ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, and more. You’ll need their server details and credentials to proceed.
  2. Access VPN Settings:
    • Windows 10: Click on the Start button, then go to Settings > Network & Internet > VPN. Alternatively, you can search for “VPN” in the search bar and select “VPN settings.”
    • Windows 7: Click on the Start button, then go to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Set up a new connection or network > Connect to a workplace > Use my Internet connection (VPN).
  3. Add a VPN Connection:
    • Click on “Add a VPN connection” (Windows 10) or “Set up a new connection or network” (Windows 7).
    • Enter the necessary information:
      • VPN provider: Select “Windows (built-in)”.
      • Connection name: Choose a name for the connection, e.g., “My VPN.”
      • Server name or address: Enter the server address provided by your VPN service.
      • VPN type: Choose the protocol your VPN service supports (e.g., PPTP, L2TP/IPsec, SSTP, or IKEv2).
      • Type of sign-in info: Depending on the VPN service, choose either “Username and password” or “Smart card” (as provided by your VPN provider).
  4. Configure Authentication:
    • If you chose “Username and password” in the previous step, enter your VPN service’s username and password.
    • If you have advanced settings like proxy servers or custom DNS, you can configure them by clicking on the “Change adapter options” link and finding your VPN connection.
  5. Connect to the VPN:
    • Go back to the main Network & Internet settings page (Windows 10) or Network and Sharing Center (Windows 7).
    • Click on the VPN connection you’ve just created and click the “Connect” button.
    • Enter your credentials if prompted.
  6. Disconnect from the VPN:
    • To disconnect, go back to the Network & Internet settings page (Windows 10) or Network and Sharing Center (Windows 7), and click the “Disconnect” button for the VPN connection.
