What are releases and versions?

Versions represent points in time for your project. They can be used to schedule how features are rolled out to your customers, or as a way to organize work that has been completed for the project.

In Jira Software, versions are managed in the Releases hub.

Versions are handled differently in Scrum and Kanban projects.

  1. A version in a Scrum project is pre-planned and is released when the planned work is complete.
  2. In a Kanban project, a version can be released at any time — the version will contain all issues that are complete at that time.

Once releases are enabled, you can choose which version to assign your issues to using the Fix versions field.

To view all the versions in your project, select Releases from the project menu. From here, you can select Create version to start planning your next release.

Note: When you enable releases, the following will happen:

  • The Fix versions field will be added to all issue types in your Jira Software project.
  • A new option will appear in the project menu, Releases. This is where you can manage your versions.
