In NetSuite, the weight of a kit/package can be calculated in two ways depending on your setup:
1. Manual Weight Entry (for the Kit as a Whole)
You can enter the weight of the kit/package manually in NetSuite, typically in the Item Record for the kit.
- Kit/Package Item Record:
- Go to Lists → Accounting → Items.
- Create or edit the Kit/Package item.
- In the Weight field (under the Shipping section), you can enter the weight of the entire kit/package.
- This is useful if the weight is fixed for the entire package, regardless of the individual items inside.
2. Automatic Weight Calculation Based on Component Items
If you want NetSuite to automatically calculate the weight of the kit/package based on the individual items that make up the kit, you can use the following approach:
- Each Item’s Weight in the Kit:
- Ensure that each component item within the kit has its weight defined in its item record. To do this:
- Go to Lists → Accounting → Items.
- Edit each component item in the kit.
- Under the Shipping tab, enter the weight of the individual item.
- Kit Weight Calculation (Automatically):When you add components to the kit (in the Kit/Package item record), NetSuite can calculate the total weight by summing up the weights of each individual component.
For example:
- If your kit contains 3 items, and each item has a weight of 2 lbs, 3 lbs, and 1 lb, NetSuite will calculate the total weight of the kit as 6 lbs.
Important Notes:
- Automatically Calculated Weight:
- When you create a sales order or shipment for the kit, NetSuite will sum the weights of the component items to determine the total weight for the shipping or fulfillment process.
- This feature relies on having the individual item weights set correctly in the system.
- Shipping Settings:
- Ensure that the shipping settings for the kit and its components are configured correctly for NetSuite to use the weight in shipping calculations.
- You may want to review any integrated shipping modules like UPS, FedEx, or USPS for how they calculate shipping costs based on weight.
- Weight for Fulfillment/Shipping:
- In a scenario where you’re fulfilling or shipping a kit, the total weight of the kit will depend on the sum of the weights of the components (if automatic calculation is enabled).
- Custom Weight Calculations might be needed if you have complex requirements (e.g., different packaging for different items or special handling).
