Difference Between Authorize Return on Sales Order and Invoice

Authorize Return button appears on both Sales Orders and Invoices. Here’s the difference between the behavior of the two that can help you know which aligns to your business process more.

  • When you use the Authorize Return on Sales Order, it will only return items that you have already fulfilled.
  • When you use the Authorize Return on Invoices, it will return the items that are on that Invoice.

It is usually recommended to do it directly on the Invoice so that all changes made on the order will be captured correctly on the return. Still, here’s a sample illustration for your reference:

  • Sales Order has two line items, both were fulfilled, only Item 1 was invoiced.

a. Click Authorize Return from Invoice

Result: NetSuite will return only Item 1.

b. Click Authorize Return from Sales Order

Result: NetSuite will allow you to return either or both items.
