When customizing record forms in NetSuite, achieving a clean and readable layout is essential for usability. Sometimes, fields placed in a single column may appear too close together horizontally, especially when multiple fields are aligned in the same row. This can make the form look cluttered and harder to navigate.
To solve this, NetSuite provides a flexible feature called Field Groups, which can be creatively used to add horizontal spacing between fields — even in a single-column layout.
Problem Scenario
You have six fields arranged in a single column. However:
- The first three fields are aligned too closely with the next three.
- The layout appears compressed, with insufficient horizontal spacing between fields in the same row.
Solution: Using Unnamed Field Groups for Spacing
To improve spacing and layout clarity, follow this approach:
- Create a Main Field Group
- This acts as the container for all sub-field groups and maintains overall structure.
- Add Two Unnamed Field Groups
- Create two additional field groups.
- Uncheck the “Show Name” option so they appear without labels.
- Set both to Single Column layout.
- Distribute Fields Across the Two Groups
- Place the first three fields in the first unnamed field group.
- Place the remaining three fields in the second unnamed field group.
- Nest Both Unnamed Groups Under the Main Field Group
- This ensures alignment and introduces horizontal spacing between the grouped fields.
Result
- Fields are visually separated within the same column.
- The layout is cleaner and easier to read.
- No extra labels or clutter are introduced.
- The form maintains a professional and user-friendly appearance.
Tips
- Use unnamed field groups to create invisible containers for layout control.
- Nesting field groups under a main group helps maintain alignment and structure.
- You can apply this technique to any form where field spacing is a concern — including custom records, transactions, and Suitelets.
