When it comes to searching the web for answers, Google has long been a top choice. Typing a few search terms into the engine can instantly yield pages of helpful results that provide all sorts of information on a topic, from how-to guides to expert insights. But with the rise of social media, it’s increasingly common to see search queries being answered through forums and other user-generated content platforms instead of on traditional websites like Google. And in response to these trends, Google has launched a new feature called “Perspectives” that aims to give users more personalized search results.
Perspectives serves as a filter and dedicated section within the Search Engine that displays a curated stream of videos, images, and written entries shared on discussion boards, Q&A websites, and social media platforms. By using generative AI to understand the context of a search query, the filter can then serve up relevant experiences that align with the search terms and provide a more “lived experience” than the regular search results.
Specifically, when a user searches for topics that have been discussed extensively on platforms like Reddit or Quora, the Perspectives filter will appear and showcase a range of perspectives from people who have either experienced something first-hand or are knowledgeable about a particular subject in detail. This is similar to how Google has already begun surfacing discussions from these platforms among its standard search results in 2022, and it’s an approach that should appeal to Gen Z, whose use of social media often means they’re googling questions about specific threads on sites like Reddit.
As for how to access this feature, you can find it by scrolling down through the menu items in your search bar until the Perspectives option appears. It’s important to note that this is not a replacement for existing filters or query refinements, and in fact, it’s hidden quite well in the list of options at the bottom of the screen on mobile. However, this could change in the future, and it’s certainly a nice addition to an already robust set of Search Engine Optimization tools that help users dive into the world of online knowledge.
For content creators, this new search option is a welcome addition to the ever-growing suite of ways they can optimize their video content for visibility on SERPs. As the lines between traditional SEO and creator-led content become more and more blurred, leveraging a platform like TikTok or YouTube to create relevant, engaging experiences for your audience is likely the best way to get ahead in the race for search visibility.
