Inline editing for child record, directly from the parent record

Inline editing for child record fields directly from a parent search is not possible by default in NetSuite. This is due to the way child records are handled in saved searches.

In NetSuite, when you’re working with a parent record (like a Customer, for example) and joining child record fields (like fields from related transactions or custom records), those child record fields are essentially considered read-only in the saved search view. Inline editing is designed primarily for fields that exist directly on the parent record.

Why This Happens:

  • Parent vs. Child Records: The parent and child records are often treated as separate entities in the database, even if they are related. This makes inline editing in a parent record search limited to fields that belong to the parent itself.
  • Child Record Fields: Even if the child record is joined in the search, NetSuite does not allow direct editing of child record fields via inline editing in a parent record’s saved search. This is mostly because inline editing is designed to work with the data that is directly in the list (parent) rather than the data joined from a related (child) record.
