Restricting Client Access to Internal Issues in Jira

When creating projects in Jira, clients (or customers) are often added for collaboration and visibility. However, in some cases, you may want to restrict clients from viewing certain internal tasks or development issues.

To achieve this, follow the steps below:

Step 1: Create an Issue Security Scheme

Create a Security Level Scheme that defines which users or groups can view specific issues.

This scheme will help restrict clients from accessing issues meant for internal development.

Go to Jira Settings → Work Items → Add Work Item Security Scheme.

Click Add Issue Security Scheme and create appropriate security levels (e.g., “Internal Only,” “Client Visible”).

Assign permissions to roles or groups as needed.

Step 2: Add and Configure a Security Field

Next, create a custom field (for example, “Security Level” or “Visibility Control”) to manage issue visibility.

Go to Jira Settings → Work Items → Fields and create the field.

Add it to your issue layout (layout configuration). If it is already created configure in your layout

Ensure it appears in the issue view so that authorized users can set or adjust visibility.

When the field is configured properly, issues associated with a security level will display a lock symbol, indicating restricted visibility. Reporters or authorized users can use this option to limit access while working on tasks.

Step 3: Ensure Proper Permissions

Please note that only users with the appropriate Jira permissions (such as Jira Administrator or Project Administrator) can:

Create or edit security schemes

Configure custom fields and layouts

Assign security levels to issues

By implementing these configurations, your team can safely manage internal work within Jira while ensuring that clients only see the information relevant to them.
