Role of Fuzzy logic in Manufacturing arena

  • The word fuzzy means things that are not clear or vague. Sometimes, we cannot decide in real life whether the given problem, our statement is true or false. At that time, this concept provides many values between the true and false and gives the flexibility to find the best solution to that problem.
  • The use of fuzzy logic in practical settings is on the rise. In tandem with other cutting-edge control methods, it is making a quiet but welcome return to industrial control automation systems.
  • Fuzzy logic will not take the place of traditional control systems completely instead it completes these systems. The advantage it offers arises from the fact that it can codify and replicate the designers’ or operators’ expertise in process control and tuning.
  • It was used in a wide range of electrical and electronic household appliances, notably in Japan during the very early ’90s. Numerous advancements such as washers and camcorders with steady short picture stabilization and others have made the term fuzzy logic more widely known. Automatic gear transmission, fuel injection, and climate control are just a few areas where fuzzy logic can be applied to great effect in the automotive industry.
  • Let us now look at the simple example of selecting ripe mangoes using fuzzy logic. Shown here are the raw mango and ripe mango.

  • Here, we are choosing the ripe mango with the help of its color. This is the conventional way of selecting the mango.

  • Let us say X is the raw mango and Y is ripe mango. The conventional set will be like this, Y will be inside the set and X will be outside the set. You’ll have a crisp outline.

  • But when it comes to selecting the ripe mangoes by using fuzzy logic, the transition of raw mango into a ripe mango will start from this stage. So we need to take this mango into consideration for selecting a ripe one. Let us assume T for this mango.

  • This is how the fuzzy set look like. Each fuzzy set’s contours are fuzzy or gradual, not crisp.
