Understanding Bill of Materials in NetSuite

A Bill of Materials (BOM) in NetSuite is a critical record that lists the quantities of raw materials, assemblies, sub-components, and parts needed to manufacture a product¹². It’s not a transaction-type record, but an essential part of the manufacturing process¹².

Associated Records: Key records associated with a BOM include the Assembly Item and BOM Revision records¹. The Assembly Item record defines the finished product, while the BOM Revision records list the components needed for the assembly.

Lifecycle of a BOM: The lifecycle of a BOM in NetSuite involves several stages:

1. Creation: A BOM is created when a new product needs to be manufactured. This is done by navigating to Lists > Supply Chain > Bills of Materials.

2. Revision: Each BOM can have multiple revisions, but only one revision can be active at a time. The active revision is determined by setting the start date to a date in the past and the end date to a date in the future.

3. Usage: The BOM is used to plan for the utilization and purchase of components that are effective or obsolete within specific time frames. NetSuite determines whether a component is valid for an assembly based on these dates.

4. Update: If a new revision needs to be created, the effective end date of the current revision must be updated first. After setting the effective end date, a new revision can be created.

In NetSuite, the Bill of Materials (BOM) is a critical record used by several other records. Here are the key records that use BOMs:

1. Assembly Item Record: This record defines the finished product that needs to be manufactured. It uses the BOM to understand the components required for its assembly.

2. BOM Revision Record: This record lists the components needed for the assembly. Each BOM can have multiple revisions, but only one revision can be active at a time.

3. Work Order Record: Work orders, which orchestrate the production process, use the BOM to determine the materials required for manufacturing.

4. Sales Order Record: Sales orders can generate work orders if they include the assembly item. These work orders then use the BOM to plan for production.
